This applies only to Psychics in the Free World. Soviet psychics will be dealt with another time and place.

Psychic powers, otherwise known as “scanning”, came to be known in 1981, with the ConSec debacle. 783 women were known to have taken Ephemerol during a clinical trial in 1947. 237 of their children survived to adulthood more or less sane, mostly less.

A limited, invitation-only exhibition of scanning was infiltrated by one Darryl Revok and ConSec’s top scanner was killed, along with six other security personnel.

The CIA, NSA, and Department of Defense, strongarmed and blackmailed as many scanners as possible into performing various needed services. Many scanners went into hiding in other countries or underground in America.

The amount of Ephemerol in the mother’s system determines the scanning strength of the child. The more Ephemerol, the more power and the more mental problems that are developed. The less Ephemerol, the fewer and weaker the scanning powers are and the easier it is to control these powers.

When an individual undergoes a massive physiological change, such as being turned into a vampire (Anamiae or Dracula), Ephemerol, normally inert in an adult non-scanner’s body, causes the necessary changes to the physiology and a new scanner is born.

Ephemerol, in a scanner’s body, inhibits their scanning ability (until the body metabolizes it). This drug is rare and very strictly controlled by those who know about it.

The Ephemerol distributed in 1981 by Darryl Revok has been found to be less potent than that distributed in 1947, presumably because Revok wanted to stay "king of the scanner mountain", as it were.

Scanners are known to be able to be able to manipulate other people's bodies with just their minds: pyrokinesis, telepathy, telepathic interrogation, mind control up to and including suicidal commands, psychic invisibility, as well as causing hallucinations, seizures, retching, intense pain, internal bleeding, nerve damage, heart attacks, coma, as well as, very rarely, gross physical disturbances of the skin, and massive, rapid buildup of intracranial pressure through means unknown.
